Welcome to the hope page for the first round of the Rudy Project Series 2010. This is being Hosted by Bath Cycling Club, and is (I believe) the second time we as a club have hosted a national, the first time being 1987 when we hosted the national 100. This time round though its time for an event more sporting in nature. The event has been part of the sporting series in the west (WTTA hardriders) almost since the start of that series, and is one of the classic sporting events. In places its a fast course, in places there is the odd hill (or two), road surface is generally good - but a bit ratty in places. Really and event that has it all, where onl the hardest rider wins.
The course starts on the A361 to the east of Frome, just south of the "Pylon" roundabout (I guess its called that, due to a huge pylon that sits just next to it - anyway close to Berkley). There is a large layby (on both sides of the road), and our start is on the one for travelling south. This part of the A361 forms part of the Club 10m and 25m course, and is a good fast road (if not for the numerous roundabouts - which you only do one on the U32B).
From the start proceed south to the first rounadbout (Blatchbridge), and take the first exit south, the B3092 to Maiden Bradly. This road you follow for quite a distance down, its quite an undualting road, that slowly climbs - the undualtions are just enough to break your rhythm, and the climbs just enough to sap ones speed. Eventually though on your way south a pair of knolls, and the going gets easier as you start to descent towards Mere. This part of the course is one of the fastest patches, you'll see some of your greatest speed. Soon though you cross under the A303, and enter the town of Mere.
Here the course continues on the B3095 (the B3092 turns off to the right), and you pass through the centre of Mere. Take care in this small town, it should be quiet at the time of the race, but expect parked cars. Through Mere riders stay on the main road, slowly turning to the right. As you exit Mere you see the next stage of the race ahead.
Under the A303 again, and ahead of you the road steepens. This starts the major climb on the course, well over 100m vertical, up a hill with repeated 1 in 7 sections; make sure you gear suitably - I've usually raced up here well down the block on a 39T chainring. Eventually, after a few turns in the road, you reach the top. Ahead lies views of wide open contrside, it is very exposed. In a headwind thi section must be horrible, althouh every time I've ridden the course its been calm or I've had a tail wind. In these conditions you can make rapid progres over the next few miles, eventually you start descending from the top towards the Deverills.Just before comming to Kinston Deverill there are two sharp bends, take great care here. The first (left hand bend) slowly tightens, which can catch you unaware. At the bottom of the hill, you'll see a sharp 90 degree right hand bend - take this with care. The next few miles you pass through several small pictureque villages, the Deverills. First Kingston (Deverill), followed by Monkton (Deverill), Brixon (Deverill), Hill (Deverill) (beware of the mud and grit on the road), and finally meeting the A350 at Longbridge Deverill.
The course turn left nto the A350, but almost immediately takes the next left up a minor road. This road countinues below the hills you decended to your left, slowly climbing. This gentle climb (about 80m vertical) takes you all the way to the finish, on the outskirts of Maiden Bradley.
From here you'll have about an 8mile ride back to the HQ. Continue along the road into Maiden Bradley. At the cross roads (take care, you are crossing the course), turn right - and ride back up the course retracing your way to the HQ.
