cyclo-cross

Cyclocross is one of the most accessible and fun forms of cycle-sport.

Races typically last for an hour and include a variety of terrain, mostly grass, often mud and occasionally woods and bits of tarmac, sometimes with obstacles that mean you’ll have to dismount and run with or carry your bike. You won’t need a ‘cross bike either, a mountain bike or even a flat-bar hybrid fitted with suitably knobbly tires will do.

Western Cyclocross League

The most popular, local off-road races are organised by the Western Cyclocross League. Races are held in the summer between May and July and in the winter between October and January. Races are held across the southwest in Gloucester, Bristol, Bath, Somerset and even the Forest of Dean. Courses are short ,cyclocross-style affairs typically involving grass, mud, sand and even the odd stream crossing. Races last approximately one hour for seniors and veterans with shorter races for juniors. To find out more check out the western league’s website and facebook page.
